THE ICE WE DIDN’T BURN
The glaciers of the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda are vanishing, but what will that mean for the people who call the region home?
Vanishing Glaciers
The Rwenzori Mountains on the border between Uganda and the DRC are legendary.
Ptolomy and the ancient Greeks knew of them- The Mountains of the Moon
In 1906 the Duke of Abruzzi conducted an expedition to the region and took a photo of the glaciers of Mount Stanley.
Today, those glaciers are almost gone.
The Bakonjo people, for whom the area is home and who serve as mountain guides in this range, have seen the environment change exponentially in their lifetimes. Yet their voices are seldom heard.
It is often said that the people impacted most by climate change are those who have done the least to cause it. The mills and mines of our past have left a legacy which may determine their future.
The Ice We Didn’t Burn is a documentary project seeking to tell the story of climate change in the region through the eyes of those most affected by it.
